Top Dragun, 2013
On the weekend of Sept 27 - 29, I joined forces with my friend Angelo Hizon and a new team to build an Oculus Rift flight simulator for Indie Game Jam 2013. Like previous weekend game jams, this one presented the challenge of building a game prototype in less than 48 hours.
My team included:
Angelo Hizon, Cofounder at VastApps Inc - Game Designer/ Art Direction/ 3D Artist
Albert Olivera, Unity Programmer at LoveMyHome - Programmer
Celeste Gamble, UI Artist at Tophatter - 3D Artist (Rosie)
Chris Lapena - Animator
In this flight simulator, you pilot a rickety, damaged B29 while giving commands to your crew engineers, Rosie the Riveter and Lefty O'Toole, who are responsible for maintaining the right and left sides of the plane. If one side of the plane falls into disrepair, your crew members must successfully fix the plane, or the plane will begin to falter, favoring one side or the other. You must then either give better commands, or try to fly the plane despite its issues.
(Note: This game prototype was an opportunity to explore the Oculus Rift and the Hydra controller. It was by no means an attempt at accurately simulating flight!)
My primary contribution was Rosie the Riveter, who was modeled/ modified from a generic female, unwrapped, and textured in less than six hours, allowing plenty of time for our animator to rig her with Mixamo, then contrive a handful of short animations, which were then successfully implemented in the game.
